Infinite Finitudes

Humans are finite, but are always looking for something infinite, perhaps infinity itself. It is, of course within us all, all the time - infinite diversity, infinite possibilities.

Infinity itself, of course, can only ever be something we humans perceive as a mathematical construct, a method we use to label a change, a fluidity in something as it moves from the finite to the infinite. From 1 to 2 and 2 to 4 and on and on, we use this construct to increase the finite exponentially. What is small at the start will become infinite.

This construct is with humans at our birth, at the beginning of life as our cells divide, again and again. Creating more cells, a new possibility with each new cell. Infinite possibilities. I seek to express this in my work. This new work, <Seed 1> takes its motifs from the sky.  The variety of sky we decide to   distinguish—the night is dark and the day blue — is the same sky. There is only that one sky, but each of us wants to see it in our own way, different from others. I started my work looking at fragments, small pieces that could form an image – I now look at these fragments growing, developing, creating other fragments. Creating infinite possibilities, one fragment, one cell after another, expanding the number one after the other, reaching toward infinity. Imperfect nature, endless movement, creation, infinite possibilities—this is what I seek in these pictures of us as humans.

유한성 속의 무한성

​

1. 

 

인간은 유한하다. 그리하여 무한한 것을 동경한다. 그런데 사실 유한한 인간 속에 무한이 들어있다. 무한한 다양성, 무한한 가능성이 그것이다.

​

유한한 것이 무한에 가까워지는 방법. 무한은 수학적인 개념으로, 나는 그 방법이 기하급수적 증가라고 생각한다. 1에서 2로 2에서 4로.. 처음에는 미미하나 곧 무한에 가까운 거대한 수가 된다.

인간에게도 이 무한으로 이끄는 기하급수적 증가가 나타나는데, 바로 생명 탄생의 시작을 알리는 세포분열이다. 나는 이 세포분열의 기하급수적 형태가 무한한 가능성을 상징한다고 생각하여 그 형상을 차용하기로 하였다. 처음 만든  작품 <Seed 1>은 하늘을 소재로 한 것인데, 밤은 검고, 낮에는 파란 등, 우리가 생각하는 여러 가지 하늘은 사실은 한 개의 하늘을 보고 우리가 다양하게 구분 짓는 것들이다. 다른 말로 하면 하나의 하늘 안에 각자가 다르게 보는 수 많은 다양한 하늘들이 들어있는 것이다. 기존 작품에서 이미지의 가장 작은 파편 하나를 형상화 했다면 그 다음으로는 파편들이 또 다른 파편들을 만들어내는 모습을, 파편이 전개되는 그 다음 과정을 형상화 하였다. 그리하여 그것은 꼬리에 꼬리를 물고 기하급수적으로 증가하며 무한에 가까운 가능성을 암시한다. 불완전한 모습, 끝없는 움직임, 무한한 가능성. 이는 바로 내가 찾고자 하는 우리 인간의 도식, 인간의 초상이다.
