Perennial

  Something forever - continuously repeated. This title of my new series reflects on describing a perennial plant.

​

  When thinking about a splendid fresh bloom, the first idea would be of youth or the beauty of youth that captures the instant moment of something that easily disappears and is missed. It is typical to represent the beauty of women as a flower. However, I like to include all the stories of us as like to a flower. Isn’t everyone trying hard to blossom in the way of their life?

​

  Flowers in my painting are different from typical flower paintings as their roots are depicted as in an illustrated plant book. People often disparage the roots when enjoying flowers. For example, when a bouquet is made, flowers are used for the decoration, or they are painted, while the roots are always excluded. It seems like only flowers are meaningful and the remainder is subordinate. Thus, it seems right to seek only flowers.

  However, how many flowers are there that can stand for days without their roots? The source of a flower is its root; there is no flower without a root. If there is a root, we do not feel sorry to lose its flower; it will bloom again.

​

  I paint the flower that will never die, hoping that the flower in the painting is strong enough to survive with its root - that can be hope and courage for someone. Please do not feel sad to suffer hardships or to get old with time. If patient, you can bloom again someday. Therefore, if one sees a flower blooming and dropping off with time, a flower is not the only fruit of life but the time itself becomes important.

  This series of a flower reflects my will to live. In this modern society growing up from a child to an adult, and an adult to a mother, I try not to forget who I am. The flower in my painting represents me or us whom the root keeps alive.

Perennial    

​

  영원한. 계속 반복되는. 다년생의 식물을 의미하는 이 단어가 내가 새로 시작하는 시리즈의 제목이다.

​

  화려하게 핀 싱싱한 꽃이라고 하면 가장 먼저 연상되는 것이 “젊음”, “청춘의 아름다움”과 같이 없어지기 쉬워 아쉬운 찰나의 순간일 것이다. 실제로 여성의 아름다움은 꽃에 자주 비유되곤 한다. 하지만 나는 꽃을 두고 우리 모두의 이야기를 하고 싶다. 모두 각자의 인생에서 자기 만의 꽃을 피워보려 열심히들 살아가고 있지 않은가?

​

  내가 그린 그림을 보면 흔히 보는 “꽃 그림”과는 조금 다른 부분이 있는데, 그건 바로 꽃 도감처럼 뿌리까지 그려져 있다는 점이다. 나는 꽃이라는 식물에서 대중에게 가장 폄하되고 있는 부분이 뿌리라고 생각한다. 꽃다발을 만들 때, 장식을 할 때, 그림을 그릴 때 뿌리는 어김없이 잘려져 나간다. 마치 꽃만이 의미 있고 나머지는 부수적인 것처럼. 그리하여 전체 중 가장 아름다운 꽃 만을 우리가 추구해야 하는 것처럼.

  하지만 그러한 뿌리 없는 꽃이 과연 며칠이나 버틸 수 있을까? 꽃의 근원은 뿌리이다. 뿌리 없이는 애초에 꽃을 피울 수 없다. 뿌리가 있다면 우리는 꽃이 지더라도 실망하지 않는다. 다시 피울 수 있으므로.

  따라서 시듦을 걱정하지 않아도 되는 나의 꽃이 누군가의 삶에 희망과 용기가 되기를 바라며, 영원히 죽지 않을 꽃을 그린다. 풍파에 쓰러져, 혹은 시간이 다해 시들었다고 슬퍼하지 말기를. 인내한다면 언제고 다시 꽃피울 수 있으니. 그렇게 계속해서 피고 지는 꽃(plant)을 바라본다면 우리에게 즐거움을 주는 것은 더 이상 꽃(bloom)이 아니라 꽃이 피고지는 과정(life) 자체가 되리라.

​

  이러한 꽃그림 연작은 따라서 살아남고자 하는 나의 의지가 반영된 것이라 할 수 있다. 현대 사회 속에서 혹은 아이에서 어른, 엄마가 되는 격변하는 삶 속에서, 나라는 존재를 잃어버리지 않기 위해. 작품 속의 꽃은 뿌리를 단단히 내리고 살아남고자 하는 또 다른 나, 혹은 우리이다.
